The process of regaining one’s health begins with a diagnosis, usually followed by pharmacological treatment or, if necessary, surgical intervention. But merely tackling the problem does not constitute the full recovery, which - according to the current definition by the World Health Organization (WHO) means not only lack of disease, but also physical well-being and mental comfort. Physiotherapy deals with this stage of treatment, that is restoring fitness. Contrary to some widely-held beliefs, its loss is associated not only with disease or injuries of the musculoskeletal system. What follows is a reduction in the of one’s independence, and even problems when handling activities of everyday life. Not to mention the development of neurological and cardiological diseases (strokes, heart attacks), especially after being bed-ridden after being admitted to the hospital, further exacerbating these issues. In all of these cases, the only way to improve the functioning of the patient is to employ the help of a professional physiotherapist. The faster, the better. Until recently, physiotherapy was treated as the last - and sometimes neglected - stage of treatment. Now, thanks to the progress of medicine, it is known that the majority of problems faced by patients after severe injuries and diseases are the consequence of ... the overdue introduction of physiotherapy in the treatment process. Compared to other branches of medicine, it incorporates unique methods. Doctors employ pharmaceuticals, while surgeons hone their craft with a scalpel. Physiotherapists call upon the body’s natural ability to heal itself and use a myriad of treatment modalities based on forces found in nature. These stimuli seem like taken straight from a Physics textbook – high and low temperature, electrical currents, light and magnetic fields. They also take part in interventional therapy, except that they use their hands instead of a scalpel, sometimes using specialized equipment
